Inertia

Inertia is an instrumental project focusing on electronic and ambient textures, classic drum loops and guitar-driven grooves. The project came together very quickly in the late 90′s and early 2000′s and was recorded primarily in my home studio using an early version of Cakewalk, the excellent free drum loop program Hammerhead, my Washburn EA20 acoustic and Washburn N2 electric, Fender Jazz Bass and trusty Line 6 POD. Keyboard, percussion and ambient parts were captured using a Yamaha SY85 synth. All songs were tracked live. Although this project has many cringe-worthy moments, it was my first recording endeavor. It isn’t good practice to ignore the past: we have to see where we came from!

Intertia (1999)

Intertia

Written sometime around 1999 and recorded in my fledgling home studio. Inertia is me envisioning a nice, relaxing drive down an open Florida road.

427 (1999)

427

A very open and loose jam, recorded and just thrown into the mix. 427 has no significance other than I recorded this on my birthday in 1999.

Interlude (1999)

Interlude

A short piece to transition into the rest of the project. I chose the name Interlude because this was the last song recorded before picking up the historic Line 6 POD, which opened up all sorts of tonal avenues for me to explore with guitar and bass sounds. You can actually hear the recording texture change between the first three tracks on the album and the remainder.

Movement and Being (1999)

Movement and Being

Movement and Being was written after witnessing the sound and fury of a Florida summer storm.

Forlorn (1999)

Forlorn

Forlorn is written for the brokenhearted.

The Wisdom of One (2000)

The Wisdom of One

This track is written for a very special person in my life. It is my favorite piece off of this project. Using octave harmonies on the guitar parts, I was able to conjure up some very meaningful passages on the lead track.

Boxed In (2000)

Boxed In

Boxed In is my attempt at an industrial flavored, guitar driven project piece. It features sound samples from a few different movies, as well as over the top (and poorly played) lead solo work. Not my best work, but certainly fun to put together.

The Unspeakable Gift (2000)

The Unspeakable Gift

This track shows the experimentation I was willing to undergo in an effort (early on) to add real texture to songs. In this track, there is a steady undercurrent of white noise that gradually builds until the song comes to an end. At that point, the white noise oscillates into warbling and distortion. I feel this is one of the stronger tracks off of the project. It has a very ambient and classic feel to me.
