Taking Inventory

I have learned that the process of creating an album of original material is an interesting one. When this project first started out it was intended to be a largely acoustic and folk-centered EP with 3-5 songs. I was originally interested in performing all of the parts myself (which is the way I create song demos), more as a personal challenge than a showcase of talent. Since I began the project, I have ended up involving several different musicians, studios, equipment and musical ideas. What began as a solo folk EP has developed into a full length album that falls into a specific theme and still surprises me at each listen.

This Sunday, I am heading down to The Backroom Studios to track drums and additional bass and guitars on the tracks that are going to eventually make up the album. At last count, there are 9 full length tracks and a few interlude pieces that will be interspersed throughout the tracks. I have spent almost two years plotting these songs and chipping away at the project one little piece at a time. I am proud and excited to be nearing the completion…although knowing my tendencies I will probably be spending many more months obsessively fretting over the musical nuance and experimenting with other sound concepts. That’s probably the greatest thing about music, especially original music: it’s just so malleable.

Adding content to this site has been a slow process, but there is a torrent of material and information on the horizon…I just have to wait for it to all come together. Stay tuned!

The Monotony of Indifference

I have a lot of new things to add to the site, but just can’t seem to get around to it. There are a lot of unfinished project pieces that are just waiting for that final layer of polish: but I seem pretty unmotivated at times to get it all done. I guess it has a little to do with the holidays: traveling out of state helps the imagination but not the determination.

I am now involved in three different band projects (four if you count my solo work) so I feel like the rehearsal studio is almost a second home. It is not only a release but also a lot of work. I have to be guarded against the monotony that sometimes happens while writing and rehearsing. There is always magic there, even if the hand comes up empty at times when retrieved from the top hat. I expect to get some new and big things accomplished in 2012.

Once some more tracks are shored up I will post them here.

Surviving the Winds

I have been working in the rehearsal studio (and recording studio) like a person possessed: I am now currently in the midst of three separate band projects (four, if you count the solo acoustic stuff that I do sporadically). I am writing new material at a feverish pace and have been experimenting with tones and concepts that are pretty far beyond my usual scope. It is all very exciting and tiring at the same time. I hope to have some new material up on the site soon (there are plenty of new things recorded but nothing really ready for public consumption).

Today I added some lyrics for the finished songs with one of the band projects. The album is based on a continuous theme that will be present throughout the entirety of the record. It will all make sense when it ties together.

Oh, and I survived the hurricane.
